ThreeLac Study – Nine Month Results
This study
was begun on October 1st, 2004 and these are the results through June
30th, 2005. It was conducted under the supervision of Miriam Jang,
M.D. in San Rafael, California (17 patients), and John A. Green III, M.D. Head
of the Evergreen Center in Oregon City, Oregon (1 patient), both of whom are
DAN! doctors. None of the participants received anything of value other than
ThreeLac. The patients will be followed up with at three month intervals for the
next 15 months. The study was privately funded by a couple in Texas.
ThreeLac is
a powder, dissolved on the tongue or mixed in a small amount of liquid and taken
orally after a meal. Ingredients are: Bacillus Coagulans (200 million CFU),
Bacillus Subtilis (25 million CFU), Group D, nontoxic strain of Enterococcus
Faecalis (25 million CFU), Lemon Juice Powder, Refined Yeast Powder (feeds the
live bacteria in storage and does not affect yeast sensitive individuals), and
Fiber (FOS).
Study Protocol:
Dosage:
1-2 year
olds: start at half packet; if no bad effects, then increase to 1 packet in 3
days time, then increase by half a packet every 3 or 4 weeks for a maximum of 3
packets per day.
3 years old
and over: start at 1 packet and increase by half a pack as above.
For 11
years old and over, can increase up to 4 or 5 packets a day.
The guiding
principle is that if nothing bad or good is happening (the child has reached a
plateau), you can increase the dosage up to the maximum dosage.
Possible
side effects:
The side
effects are those of yeast die-off, which is mainly more “stimmy” or more
irritability. If these side effects get to be bothersome, you can back off the
dosage and hold it at that dosage until things improve. You can also give
activated charcoal, 2 capsules, 2 or 3 times a day, between meals and
supplements. Side effects usually would last a maximum 4-6 weeks during the
yeast die-off period. The most important thing is to make sure that the patient
is not constipated: increase Magnesium to the point of diarrhea and then ease
back on it until diarrhea goes away. Additionally, Vitamin C may be added to
increase movements. Glycerin suppositories may be given. BeneFiber or Fiber
Choice may be given. It is simply imperative to keep the bowels moving.
Other
supplements recommended:
Magnesium
Malate and B-12, either sublingually or by shots.
Supplements
to avoid:
Nystatin,
Diflucan, Other Anti-Yeast medications or supplements, Caprylic Acid, Oil of
Oregano, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Yeast Aid, Candidstatin, Uva, Ursi. Other
probiotics are not necessary.
Foods to be
avoided:
All casein:
all dairy products, including yogurt, butter and cheese. All gluten products,
including spelt. All sugars including honey, sorbitol, sucralose, syrups. Fruit
juices to be kept to a minimum, a quarter dilution (one quarter juice to three
parts water). Xylitol and Stevia are best for sweeteners. Chelation if heavy
metals are present.

The one area that has not normalized, and can sometimes be worse, is the area of anxiety. this is definitely related to the time of her periods, which only began this February, so it is early days yet. Parent's comments: "She was off ThreeLac and all supplements completely for 8 weeks, and her diarrhea (of > 1yr) never returned. She also showed no regression and her behavior is that of a recovered autistic child (no behavioral symptoms). She is now able to tolerate moderate amounts of sugar, and we just started her on 1 packet/day maintenance and the rest of her supplements ½ dose. I think she's completely normal except for needing to stay on the diet and supplements. She still has a bit of a speech delay, but improved so much that it doesn't get in her way of making friends. She's one of the friendliest kids in her class. If you were to observe the class and guess which one is autistic, you probably wouldn't guess (my daughter). She's 90% potty trained."
Update 10/24/2004: "It's hard to say now how she's improved since she's a normal "recovered, indistinguishable" girl now (other than being unusually intelligent and friendly)."

Child #15: No reply from parent regarding other questions after 30 days. May be on vacation.
Child #16: Clay baths – ongoing. Other supplements: AFP-Peptizyde, B-12 shot, Black Currant Oil, Carnosine, Cod Liver Oil, Custom Amino Acid Base, DMG w/Folinic Acid, D-Plex, EFA, Epsom S Cream, Eskimo-3 Oil, Hydrosoluble CoQ-10, L-Carnitine, L-Glutamine, Lipoceutical Glutathinoe, L-Methionine, Lycopene, Magnesium Malate, Micel-A, NAC N-Acetyl-Cysteine, No Fenol, Nu-Thera/Everyday Companion, Pantethine, Pic-Mins, Super Nu-Thera, Taurine, Vital-10, Vitamin E w/ Tocotrienols, Zinc, Zinc Monomethionine, Zyme Prime. Parent's comments: "He went from being mostly non-verbal to a "chatter box." He enjoys talking and singing. He has been diagnosed with apraxia of speech and as a result it's not always easy to understand what he's saying...but it's a huge improvement over where he was at when we started."
Update 9-12-06: "We are continuing with epsom salt cream and B-12
shots every night. We have cut back the supplements to
multivitamins (like Super Nu-Thera) and the digestive enzymes.
We continue to have both kids on the diet. J's progress has been
amazing. He made several breakthroughs in the last few weeks.
He can now pee standing up, he will poop in the toilet and he no
longer needs a diaper at night (or any other time for that mater).
He loves to talk and sing. He makes up his own words to tunes
he's learned. He enjoys playing with his "Thomas" trains and
has them carry on dialog with each other in the form of song - like
a musical. He is an incredibly bright little kindergartner.
He continues to get ABA and speech therapy and will soon be
evaluated for OT due to some lingering sensory issues.
Overall, though, we really couldn't be happier."
Child #17: Clay baths – ongoing. Other supplements: 5-HTP, AFP-Peptizyde, B-12 shot, B-Complex w/ CoEnzymes Pro, Black Currant Oil, Black Elderberry Extract, Cod Liver Oil, DMG w/ Folinic Acid, Epsom S Cream, Eskimo-2 Oil, Floradix, Glycine, Hydrosoluble CoQ-10, L-Carnitine, L-Glutamine, Lipoceutical Glutathione, L-Phenylalanine, Lycopene, Magnesium Malate, Melatonin, Micel-A, NAC N-Acetyl-Cysteine, No Fenol, Nu-Thera/Everyday Companion, O.P.C.-100, Pantethine, Pic-Mins, Super Nu-Thera, Taurine, Vital-10, Vitamin E w/ Tocotrienols, Zinc Monomethionine, Zyme Prime. Parent's comments: "She has always been a "chatter box." We have seen amazing changes in her as well. On her annual IQ tests she scored 39 points higher than last year... and 49 points on the other IQ test. If she was reevaluated today, the psychologist expects that she would lose her diagnosis."
Update 10/20/2005: "Her diagnosis has been officially reversed."
Child #18: Additional supplements: unknown. Parent's comments: "His visual awareness and performance is greatly improved along with eye contact. He now watches and learns from what he sees and now has spontaneous speech. He can now play and has social interaction. He can sit and participate in group instructions, follow classroom routines, generalize his responses and started reading, doing basic math and started learning the motions for writing. It was not uncommon before for T. to need 500 to 1,000 trials to learn something, and now he has learned things in 2 days, and more difficult things in 2 weeks. He can now count to 50 very easily and has gone up to 100. EVERYONE has noticed and commented on the changes in this child. T. now shows empathy and has run over to a child who was crying to hug him. He plays with his brother and will initiate the game. The stress has been reduced from our family - and has given us our family back. He has been pulled back out of the spinning world of autism. All of his self-mutilating behaviors have stopped. To sum it up - 6 months ago Tyler was doomed to live in an institution; he was withdrawn, had self mutilation behaviors and was nonverbal. Today we believe T will work (he loads and unloads the dishwasher now), be able to actively participate in life and love and succeed in whatever he wants to do. Last week T. said the sentence, "Momma, I love you!"
